The new project Hybridity by the Swiss choreographer Rafaële Giovanola and the ensemble around CocoonDance Company aims to merge two types of movement that, on the first glance, seem radically different in their cultures and concepts: Thai boxing (Muay Thai), which has been practiced in its present form for centuries in Thaıiland, and the romantic ballet, as conceived, for example, by the Russian choreographer Michail Fokine (*1880-1908).
Here the ensemble around Giovanola is especially interested in the ballet “Les Sylphides”, which can be seen as a homage to romantic ballet, but also as an attempt to deconstruct it and as the beginning of a continuous questioning of technique and tradition, style and staging of this art.
Thus “Les Sylphides” can be seen as a kind of meta-ballet that raises fascinating questions and offers interesting suggestions for our current project.
After Momentum, in which the company dealt with the urban sport of parkour, and Vis Motrix, which imagines a human-machine by using elements of breaking and krumping techniques, Hybridity is part of a series of works that are, also structurally, dedicated to the exploration of the “unthought body”.
